Custom Work: Hickory Kitchen Island

We enjoy the challenge and thought process involved in designing custom pieces.
We designed this space-efficient kitchen island to work in a functional kitchen that needed a bit more prep and countertop space.

The island top is a solid hickory wood construction, providing a beautiful but functional counter top for the kitchen that can double as a chopping block. The apron and legs are pine for practicality and were painted and stained to achieve a rich patina that brought this piece together with the cabinetry and appliances in the existing space.

A slat work design on the bottom shelf provides additional storage for pots & pans or is ideal for bread or dry goods storage at an arms reach. This design work also keeps airflow and ease of cleaning efficient, while adding some design detail and keeping the base lighter feeling than the sturdy countertop.

As the finishing touch, a simple pewter towel bar was installed as the drawer pull to add dual functionality for hanging towels without overpowering and weighing down the design of the piece.
